About Horror Movies

A horror film is just what it sounds like: a film dominated by elements of horror. The Film genre has itself a number of sub-genres within it such as slasher movies, vampire movies, etc. Some movies exhibit a substantial amount of cross-over with other genres, and this is particularly apparent in the field of science fiction, where many films including Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Thing, and Alien have both sets of defining characteristics.

Certain stories have proven popular and have inspired many sequels, remakes, and copycats. See Frankenstein, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, Dracula, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, werewolves, and zombies.

A number of film directors tend to gravitate towards the horror film genre and these include:

Certain film companies, notably American International Pictures (AIP), which made a series of Edgar Allan Poe themed films starring Vincent Price; and the British company Hammer Films, which became famous for their Hammer Horror line starring Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing, are well known for making films in the genre.

Notable horror films include:

  • Dark Shadows DVD Collection 4
    from Mpi Media Group.

  • The Twilight Zone - Collection 5
    from Image Entertainment.

  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer - The Complete Third Season
    from Fox Home Entertainme.

  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer - The Complete Second Season
from Twentieth Century Fox Home Video.
The second season continued one what was successfully started in the first season. The second season is a lot more ambitious (remember, the first season only had twelve episodes, unlike the rest which had 22). The story arcs in the second season are brilliant. The romance between Angel and Buffy...

  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer - The Complete First Season
from Twentieth Century Fox Home Video.
For a first time screenwriter, Joss Whedon's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" was a good effort for a feature film. I thought for sure the series was going to tank. When I started watching halfway through the first season, I quickly found that I was wrong. "Buffy" simply blossoms on television. I've been...

  • The Twilight Zone - Collection 1
    from Image Entertainment.
In response to some of the other reviews, it has happened...yes you can get the TZ collection in chronological order - all 156 episodes. I just ordered it and absolutely love the set. I found the set for sale at mediaracer.com. It's a great price, plus the special features discs have some very cool...

  • The X-Files - The Complete Fifth Season
from Twentieth Century Fox Home Video.
Even if it only has 20 episodes (The shortest season being the 9th), this season marks the end of the Vancouver era. After this and the movie, TXF team moved to LA and started what i think tobe the best season of all (The 6th), changing the full screen format for a more cinematographic style, with...

  • Predator 2
    from Fox Home Entertainme.
Yep, this description said it all! I have seen this movie too many times to mention and I STILL love watching it! The movie starts out fast and furious and there is so much action in this movie that once it starts, it DOESN'T let you catch your breath! Danny Glover may not be your first choice...

  • The X-Files - The Complete Sixth Season
    from Fox Home Entertainme.
I've come across many fans of The X-Files that proclaim Season Six to be the best season of the show; however, I think it continued the decline which started in Season Five and ended with the introduction of Robert Patrick as Agent Doggett. I really enjoyed the mythology this season - The...

  • The X-Files - The Complete First Season
    from Twentieth Century Fox.
I recently purchased this DVD box set and I can't tell you how pleased I am with the design and content! This is every X-Phile's dream come true. The design of the fold-out seven-panel box set is fabulous. The first six DVD's in this package contain all of the episodes from season one. It contains...

  • Final Destination - New Line Platinum Series
    from New Line Studios.
    Final Destination
    Score: 73/100
Final Destination has mixed reviews and a pretty much un-known cast. It didn't really look all that interesting until the world got told that it was simply the most enjoyable teen horror movie since Scream. Well, even though Final Destination was a little bit off...

  • The X-Files - The Complete Second Season
from Twentieth Century Fox Home Video.
Fox delivers another beautiful collector's edition on DVD. Thankfully they have revamped the packaging and have given us a much more durable box set then season one. In season two the show hits its stride and becomes a classic. With the x-files closed Mulder is assigned a new partner in Alex Krycek...

  • Twin Peaks - The First Season (Special Edition)
    from ARTISAN ENTERTAINMENT.
Twin Peaks rates as one of the most singularly innovative additions to network telelvision. David Lynch's obsession with making the everyday middle-american world beautifully strange (the word "awe" with its horrific element intact is useful here) and Mark Frost 's (St Elsewhere) quirky writing meld...

  • The X-Files - The Complete Fourth Season
    from Twentieth Century Fox.
In the fourth season of The X-Files, X is killed, we find out a little of CSM's background, Scully comes down with brain cancer, Skinner confronts CMS and Krycek is back (he was entombed in a Silo in the 3rd season). All 24 episodes are on 7 discs, with documentaries, deleted scenes,...

  • The Twilight Zone - Collection 2
    from Image Entertainment.
There are portions of the Twilight Zone which I won't even touch on with this review. The performances, dialogue, writing, direction, etc. are so far beyond reproach, they not even be mentioned. However, while only being 3 Volumes into this Collection 2 (who wants to rush?), something occured to me....

  • The X-Files - The Complete Third Season
from Twentieth Century Fox Home Video.
This season is, to me, one of the best ones for the X-Files. There are so many good episodes, it's hard to know where to begin. I guess the beginning. The Blessing Way / Paperclip is the best season-opening story in the history of the show, IMO. It's non-stop action and revelation, tinged with a...

  • Universal's Classic Monster Collection (Dracula/Frankenstein/The Mummy/The Invisible Man/The Bride of Frankenstein/The Wolf Man/The Phantom of the Opera/The Creature from the Black Lagoon)
    from Universal Studios.
8 movies, 8 classics. But you'll notice that I only gave it 4 stars. That's because I only like 7 of the 8 films. For some reason, I just can't sit through The Creature From the Black Lagoon. Hmm--is it me?? I bought this collection because I love the other 7 films. Dracula is my favorite, the...

  • The Nightmare on Elm Street Collection
    from New Line Studios.
This nightmare package is the best series of movies on DVD out there . It contains any type of extra a nightmare fan could dream of. Anything from trailers to interviews, music videos(like dream warriors-a great song) documentaries, commentary and much so much, much more. And of course the first...

  • Forbidden Planet
    from Warner Studios.
"It will remind us...after all...that we are not God..." --Leslie Nielsen as Commander J.J. Adams in the last scene in FORBIDDEN PLANET. WHAT A CAST!!! WHAT A SCREENPLAY!!! WHAT FANTASTIC MUSIC!!! WHAT A ROBOT!!! WHAT A MOVIE!!! The producers of FORBIDDEN PLANET took Shakespeare's "The Tempest,"...

  • Taboo
    from Columbia Tristar Hom.

  • Twin Peaks - Pilot Episode [IMPORT]
    from Phantom Sound & Visi.
This is the best the Twin Peaks Pilot has ever looked. (Well, aside from the big screen at last years Twin Peaks Fest) The disc has a surprisingly crisp and clean picture. I played this with a switchbox against the Warner Bros. Pilot Laserdisc, and the DVD did to the Laser Disc what Agent Desmond...

  • Pinata: Survival Island
    from First Look Pictures.
from the brilliant minds of King Cobra, the hillenbrand brothers, come this piece of historic art. Long delayed and kept from the general public, Pinata is both contraversal and breathtaking. 7 teens on an island; a sort of scavenger hunt gone terribly wrong. writing on par with the Bible here...

  • Them!
    from Warner Home Video.
Big bad bugs are unleashed in the sci-fi classic "Them!". A series of unexplained murders in New Mexico leads to the discovery of a horde of giant radiation-mutated ants. This amazing find becomes an epic struggle of survival between man and a menace spawned from atomic testing. "Them!" is a...

  • Vampire Hunter D - Bloodlust
    from Urban Vision Enterta.
I've been watching anime ever since I was a teenager and since a lot of is filled with a lot of explicit smut and tends to run on a thin, confusing plot, I must say I am so relieved to finally find a vampire anime that is this good! It's action packed, heavily violent at times, but it's completely...

  • Scream Trilogy - Boxed Set
    from Dimension Home Video.
I am a big fan of Scream and Scream 2 and I could not wait to see Scream 3. I was a bit dissapointed that Kevin Williamson did'nt write it but it was still a great movie and the end was brilliant. I mostly enjoyed Jennifer's (Parker Posey) part she made the movie so funny. Theonly bad thing was the...

  • Blade II - New Line Platinum Series
    from New Line Home Entertainment.
So begins the second installment of a possible action / vampire franchise, BLADE II. Wesley Snipes is back as the half-man, half-vampire hunter of the undead is a dazzling adventure that is pyrotechnically brilliant. His performance is part karate, part camp ... but it works to wonderful...

  • The Twilight Zone - Collection 4
    from Image Entertainment.
I am the world's biggest Twighlight Zone fan. Therefore, when the opportunity arrived to purchase all of the classic footage of this great series, I didn't hesitate. The problem that I'm having is that from Volume 13 on, which corresponds to the time Image Entertainment completely took over the DVD...

  • Stephen King's It
    from Warner Home Video.
This movie I believe was one of the first mini series I have seen by Stephen King. I watched from start to finish I was so interested in the kids in this film. Two who are played by popular actor's today Seth Green (Young Richie Tozer), and Jonathan Brandis (Young Bill Denbrough). The children band...

  • Rosemary's Baby
    from Paramount Home Video.
After CHINATOWN, another movie of polish director Roman Polanski has just hit the DVD market. The 1968 ROSEMARY'S BABY belongs to the most creative period of the director and stays more than 30 years after its theatrical release as one of the best horror movies ever presented. From the initial...
