Crucifixus: Liturgy of Holy Week from Carus.
The Best of the Renaissance from Polygram Records.
This CD contains, to my knowledge, the best recorded performance of the sublime Miserere by Gregorio Allegri. There is a famous story of Mozart going to the Sistine Chapel to hear the Allegri Miserere when he was fourteen years old. After having heard it, he asked to see the score and was denied... Dances of the Renaissance from Polygram Records.
This older analog recording sounds wonderful on CD, and the musical performances are well played and spirited. The only 2 reservations are that I'd like original instruments (but that doesn't negate the great recording here) and the bell/glockenspiel type instrument that is heard from time to time... Sacred Music for Five Voices from Naxos.
RUN TO BUY THIS! This is by far one of the best CD's of Gesualdo's music on the market today. Superb blend (especially in track 1) especially for music this difficult. Italian Renaissance Dances from Classical Express.
The sounds of the Italian Renaissance are very uplifting, beautiful and rational. The songs have structure and melody and flow very naturally. This collection is a pleasing variety of instrumental and vocal music with period instruments and authentic arrangements. The performances and sound quality... Miserere: Music For The Holy Week Liturgy from Sony.
This is not a review, rather a correction. You say that the composer for this CD is anonymous, but the composer is Górecki, the same artist who did Miserere for the symphony. If you change your thing or not, I don't care, but I thought you might want to know. :) Magnificat: The Golden Age, Vol.1 from Linn Records.
I second what Peter below says: this is absolutely first-rate. The choir is made up of many of the usual suspects from Tallis Scholars, and the Clerks Group and so forth - but they've got a lot more charisma and expressive power than either of those groups. They also have impeccable intonation,... Sprezzatura from Emi Classics Import.
Ever fall in love with great music? I enjoy early(Medieval/Renaissance)works, and the first time I listened to this disc, performed by the Tragicomedia ensemble, I had to add it to my growing library. They perform the sweetest viol(string) works of the sixteenth century period, very relaxing,... Pathways of Renaissance Music from Harmonia Mundi Franc.
Sacred Brass from Rca.
This is so mellow and reverent. CB's ability to blend and highlight each other is so displayed here on this recording of sacred cantatas, etc. from the 16th Century, including Palestrina, Allegri. My favorite is track 2, Misere, which flows so magnificently. Brilliant bringing to life this music...
