Gregorian chant is also known as plainchant or plainsong, and is a form of monophonic, unaccompanied singing, which was developed in the Catholic church, probably during the period 1000-1400. This music was traditionally sung by monks or other male clerics, and was used during religious services.
Gregorian Chants: Essential Classics from Sony.
Gregorian Chants from Fine Tune.
Lost in Meditation: Meditative Gregorian Chants, Vol. 1 from Delta.
Beautiful for meditation, prayer, contemplation. A bargain! Lost in Meditation: Meditative Gregorian Chants, Vol. 2 from Delta.
As you play these Gregorian Chants, think of the days when the monastic people worshipped their God in a divine manner. Picture the morning mist rising outside of some stone Monastery in the forest, and picture the sound of the chants of these devout men worshipping their creator. This CD captures... Mysteria: Gregorian Chants from Elektra/Asylum.
I came upon Chanticleer through my interest in Renaissance polyphony. I bought their recording of Palestrina's Missa Pro Defunctis and was extremely pleased. I thought at first that they were explicitly dedicated to early music (I had only come across the Palestrina and this chant CD); my impression... Gregorian Chants: The Best of the Benedictine Monks of St. Michael's from Delta.
One really hears the passion and life in the voices of these monks--keep in mind that this is not merely a group of singers who have assembled in the studio to record a CD, but rather, men whose lives are totally wrapped up in the mysteries of which they sing. I can really hear their struggles and... Luminous Spirit Chants of Hildegard von Bingen from Koch Int'l Classics.
I have it on my computer at work. People come it and ask me 1) where's the music coming from and 2) what is that? It's gorgeous! von Bingen: Ecstatic Chants from Fine Tune.
11,000 Virgins: Chants for the Feast of St. Ursula from Harmonia Mundi Franc.
This is beautiful music. The four women's voices are so soothing. This is an ideal CD to listen to if for relaxation, meditation, or prayer. I listen to it while I practice yoga. The music is also very important historically, as Hildegard von Bingen is one of the few women composers in the history... Sweet Dreams from Sony.
This is a great collection of slow stuff for classical heads and people who simply have a light appreciation for the form. The songs consist of some standards and some less-than-obvious choices, but all great stuff. While it's being marketed as a children's lullaby compilation, it's great for anyone...
